Cause of our mission

4800 tonnes of medicines end up as waste every year.

In 2022, an estimated four billion worth of medicines were destroyed across Switzerland. These incredible magnitudes were published yesterday by the Swiss broadcaster SRF. The quantities are very likely similar or worse in other EU countries.
The report is very insightful as it illustrates how difficult it is to change this situation, while many administrative and regional government stakeholders have long been trying to find solutions to enable access of especially the elderly and those with chronic conditions to access unexpired but already dispensed medicines.
ShareMed Swiss recently initiated discussions with EU policy makers to gain support for the change in this deadlock while maintaining quality and safety. E.g. by developing and issuing guidances with clear and verifiable conditions of storage, demonstrable through modern techonolgy solutions. Some US states are already leading the way in the regard!
